About Lagunas de Zempoala National Park

Lagunas de Zempoala National Park is situated in the foothills of the Ajusco mountain range, straddling the states of Morelos and Estado de México near Mexico City. The park spans approximately 4,700 acres and encompasses seven clear, interconnected lagoons fed by mountain springs, including Zempoala, Zempoalita, Tonatihua, Tecouchtli, Hueyapan, La Luna, and Quila. These bodies of water lie at elevations between 2,900 and 3,350 meters, surrounded by dense forests predominantly composed of pine, oyamel fir, and oak species. The park’s ecosystems provide habitat for a diverse array of wildlife such as foxes, squirrels, white-tailed deer, and numerous bird species including the elusive Mexican jay and various migratory waterfowl.

Historically, the area has been protected since 1936 and holds cultural significance due to its proximity to indigenous communities and pre-Hispanic routes. The park is a popular weekend retreat from Mexico City, offering a variety of recreational activities including hiking on well-marked trails, mountain biking, fishing in designated lagoons, horseback riding, and camping. Scenic overlooks provide panoramic views of the lagoons dotted amidst the forest canopy, especially striking during the rainy season when water levels rise and the greenery is lush. Environmental preservation efforts focus on maintaining water quality and preventing deforestation, ensuring the park remains a pristine natural haven. The park’s accessibility by paved road and proximity to urban centers make it a favored day-trip and short getaway destination for nature lovers, photographers, and families alike.
